DIY: SPICE RACK

March 18, 2013 by Priya Gulati 10 Comments

The other day, I purchased some black pepper only to come home to realize that I had three black pepper bottles sitting all the way in the back of my pantry! I decided it was time to get organized and do something about my spices. Deciding how to organize your spices depends heavily on the composition of your kitchen. My kitchen does not have much wall space and because it is an apartment, I cannot build or make other improvements. Thus, I had to work with what I had. After a couple of hours (no joke!) of research, I decided on this idea, which I am just in love with!

Process:
Buy uniform spice jars. I bought these glass bottles with chrome lids from the Container Store for $1.99 each. If you sign up for their emails, you can save 10% on your order.
Wash your spice jars with soap and dry them thoroughly.
Buy or create custom spice labels. I was lucky enough to have the fabulous and talented Esther Kao design custom spice labels for me. (Please visit her blog and Facebook page to see more of her unique projects. You won’t be disappointed.) Stick labels onto your spice jars. (Make sure you measure how far down from the top you are placing the stickers so when the jars sit next to each other, the stickers are all aligned.)
Using a spice funnel, transfer each spice into a new jar.
Buy 2 Ribba picture ledges from Ikea.
Have your boyfriend, fiance, S.O. affix the ledges to a wall in your kitchen.
Place your spices in alphabetical order or however you prefer.

24 spice jars: $46.83 (with 10% off coupon)
2 Ribba picture ledges: $20.00
custom spice labels by Esther Kao: $32.00
Total: $98.83

Note that there are several ways you can design this same spice rack for cheaper. I wanted high quality products which is why I bought my jars at the Container Store. I also wanted stainless steel lids. However, there are many websites, such as this one, where you can buy spice jars for $1.01, which will save you about $20.

The kitchen is my happy place and now with this gorgeous spice rack, I am even happier!

The final spice rack!

You could also just line them up on the counter, like this:

I love, love, love this idea. We just moved into a new apartment and we’re really short on space in the kitchen. This is an amazing idea on how to organize spices 🙂
